This palm originates from Kashmir, Pakistan and is related to the true date palm Phoenix dactylifera. The variety from Pakistan is the most northerly of the natural distribution and is not clustering while other varieties are. It also differentiates from other varieties because it grows larger and has a more robust look. Many varieties exist within the species loureiri and it is not unlikely that some will be classified to be separate species in the future. Because this palm grows to 1500 meter altitude in the Himalayas it is one of the most cold hardy of the Phoenix species (-8°C).
